I have some problem areas that I'd like to minimize in the photo, maybe that double chin I've inherited, or the blemish I got the day of my photo session, what can I do to look my best?

Try to imagine your background.  Green bushes, blue ponds or waterfalls, brown/tan bark on trees, colors of any flowering bushes.  You'll also want to keep in mind the colors that look best on you.  Denim shirts, polo shirts and sweaters are all popular looks with khaki or denim pants.  Again, what you're most comfortable in and what looks best on you.  Solids are preferred, loud or busy patterns on your clothing don't provide the best portrait.  If one person in the photo is wearing a white shirt, someone else in the portrait should also have on a white shirt (if there are more than two people in the portrait).

How should I dress my child for pictures?

Think of bringing out his/her personality for the photo.  Is he a cowboy?  Dress him in his western apparel.  Is she a ballerina?  Let her wear the recital outfit.  Barefeet are cute on smaller children if they are the only one in the portrait.   You may bring a change of clothes, but keep in mind that a child's attention span for pictures is not very long.
